Too often, people believe their crowded teeth are just a fact of life. Fortunately, that’s not true at all, and with the proper tools like Invisalign, teeth that sit too close together can finally get the space they need. However, if left untreated, here are some of the common problems you might develop:
Since harmful bacteria can easily become trapped when teeth are crowded, this can make it easy for cavities to develop, as well as gum disease. Without timely and effectively treatment, gum disease can quickly escalate from mild to severe, and what can be easily reversed can turn into potential bone and tooth loss.
Now that you know what can happen if you leave your crowded teeth as is, it’s time to consider the Invisalign treatment. Although these clear aligners are not for everyone, Dr. Patel will be happy to sit down with you and examine your individual case. Once given the green light for treatment, they will begin to take digital impressions of your teeth using the iTero Element 2 Digital Impression System, which will serve as a guide for dental lab technicians to create your custom aligners.
Once he is ready and back in our office, we will have you come back in for a fitting. We will provide you with your set of aligners and thorough instructions on how long to wear each set before switching to the next in the series. On average, you’ll need to wear your trays between 20-22 hours each day and be ready to switch them out after two weeks of wear.
Each time you move to a new set, you can expect to experience minimal discomfort, as your teeth are gently shifting in the right direction, but an over-the-counter pain reliever can help to diminish any pain. Not only are your aligners creating a straighter smile, but they’re also helping to create additional space between your teeth, thus, leading to a healthier and improved oral cavity.
Once you have completed your treatment with Invisalign, which can take anywhere from 12-24 months depending on the individual case, you will need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back into their original position.
